Quantification and the Garden Path Effect Reduction: The Case of Universally Quantified Subjects

چکیده
This paper investigates the effect of quantification in sentence processing. The experimental results show that temporarily ambiguous sentences that begin with the universally quantified NPs reduced the garden path effect in contrast to the ones that begin with bare NPs. This fact is accounted for by assuming that discourse representation structures are incrementally constructed, and a tripartite structure introduced by the universal quantifier gives a room for temporal ambiguity while a single box associated with a bare NP forces one interpretation and to get the correct interpretation, the single box must be rewritten, which results in the garden path effect.

The Comprehension of Garden-Path Structures by Iranian EFL Learners
The present study sought to investigate the comprehension of Garden-Path structures by Iranian EFL learners. 50 female students of Kharazmi English Language Institute in Karaj participated in this study. All of the participants were native speakers of Persian studying in Kharazmi English language institute in Karaj, Iran. They ranged from 18 to 30 in terms of age. The participants were administ...
متن کاملIntersection, Universally Quantified, and Reference Types
The aim of this paper is to understand the interplay between intersection, universally quantified, and reference types. Putting together the standard typing rules for intersection, universally quantified, and reference types leads to loss of subject reduction. The problem comes from the invariance of the reference type constructor and the rules of intersection and/or universal quantification el...
متن کاملAn Investigation into the Effective Factors in Comprehending English Garden-Path Sentences by EFL Learners
The present study aimed at highlighting the possible effects of age, proficiency level, and the structural composition of Garden-Path (GP) sentences on EFL learners' comprehension. 80 Iranian EFL learners were recruited from the initial pool of 114 participants based on the results of an English proficiency test; 40 advanced, and 40 intermediate learners were selected. Moreover, two age...
متن کاملThe symbiotic effect of Piriformospora indica on induced resistance against bakanae disease in rice (Oryza sativa L.)
The root endophytic fungus, Piriformospora indica, colonizes roots of a large number of plant species including Cereals and Brasicaceae. There are several reports indicating that P. indica protects roots from different path- ogens. In the present study, rice plants were pre-inoculated with P. indica and were subsequently infected with Fusarium proliferatum, as the causal agent of root rot and c...
متن کاملQuantification of partial volume effects in planar imaging
Introduction: The limited resolution of the imaging system causes partial volume effects (PVEs). These results in spreading of image counts to the neighboring pixels. This phenomenon is called spill-out effect. This study aimed at quantifying PVEs using ImageJ. Methods:Technetium-99m solution of concentration of 74 kBq/ml was filled into spheres A, B<...
